US Senator Calls for Full Probe Into Deadly Strike on Iranian School

(MENAFN) US Senator Mark Warner on Sunday emphasized the need for “a thorough investigation” into a fatal strike on a primary school in Iran’s southern city of Minab, which occurred in late February amid a joint US-Israeli military operation.

Speaking to CBS News, Warner expressed feeling “a little disappointed” that President Donald Trump initially sought to deny US involvement in the strike or suggested that Iran was responsible.

“But what I don't want to do is jump to the conclusion, whether it was CENTCOM or whether it was the Defense Intelligence Agency. That's what thorough investigations are supposed to be for. Clearly, it was an American strike,” he said.

Warner also criticized Trump for unclear communication regarding the objectives of the military campaign in Iran. He highlighted the economic consequences of the operation, noting higher gas prices in Virginia and reports from farmers that fertilizer costs have risen by about 40%.

According to reports, at least 150 schoolgirls were killed in an airstrike on Shajareh Tayyebeh elementary school on Feb. 28, coinciding with the start of US-Israeli attacks on Iran, which have so far resulted in around 1,300 deaths, including the country’s then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and more than 10,000 injuries.

The strike has drawn global attention amid conflicting claims over responsibility, though most analyses attribute the attack to the US. Reports note that Trump previously suggested Iran may have carried out the strike, stating: “Based on what I’ve seen, that was done by Iran.” After evidence emerged that Tomahawk cruise missiles—commonly used by the US military—were involved, he also claimed without evidence that Iran possessed some of these missiles.

Investigations into the incident are reportedly ongoing.
